Property Assessments The Scott County Assessor is responsible for developing and maintaining a list of all taxable properties in the county and placing a fair market valuation on all the property annually. It is the assessed valuation that provides the tax basis for determining property taxes.
The Assessor is responsible for placing a fair market value on property as of the tax date for the purpose of calculating taxes. However, the Assessor does not set the tax rate. The taxing authorities such as the school district, city, fire district, etc., establishes the tax rate based on their budgetary requirements. The Collector's office is then responsible for collecting the amount of tax assigned to each property owner.
January 1: The assessment date. All property is assessed as it exists on this date.
March 1: The last day to file personal property declarations without a penalty.
April/Early May: Notices of Real Estate Assessment are mailed.
Middle May: Informal hearings on assessments are held.
May 30: Certification of Tax Rolls.
Third Monday in June: Deadline for filing appeals to the Board of Equalization.
August 15: Deadline to file appeals to the Missouri State Tax Commission
Real Estate and Personal Property tax statements are mailed out in November. Tax payments are due by December 31 of each year. Payments received after December 31 are subject to penalty and interest charges.
